The Lake Hassel Menighed (Lake Hazel Congregation) was organized on October 23, 1871. There were originally 40 members. Most were Norwegian immigrants, with a few from Sweden.
The original church (seen in the background) was built in 1887. Until that time services were held in various members homes.
The Ladies Aid Society was established in 1885. Through their fund raising activities they were able to purchase the pulpit, bell, steeple, altar painting, and contributed $200 to the building fund.
In 1924 the church underwent a major renovation. It was time to get rid of the smokey old wood stove and get a furnace. A larger space would be needed. The decision was made to dig a basement. Then there would also be space for a kitchen and fellowship hall.
This would be a good idea but hard to do. Torger Lee had an idea. Instead of jacking up the church digging under it, why not dig the basement across the road and move the church onto it? It was done at at a cost of $2500. The entire cost of the project was paid by the Ladies Aid.
In 1940 the church was wired for electricity.
In 1949 the church was extensively remodeled and enlarged. A 12X22' addition was added to the northwest side, which enlarged the furnace room and kitchen in the basement, and added a choir loft and pastors study upstairs. The balcony was removed. The ceiling was lowered and acoustical tile installed. A new oak floor was installed and the sanctuary was totally redone.
In 1958 the stained glass windows were added.
In 1960 a well was dug to supply running water to the kitchen. But then as now, you still had to go out back to use the rest room.
